Starting Seeds

It’s seedling week! I meant to write this LAST monday, but time has gotten away from me.

Between changing our chicken coop set up, setting up our sun room to start seeds, family being in town, and trying to tap some trees for the sap flow this week…. I seem to be running in circles!! But enough is enough; it is time to let you loyal readers know what I’m sprouting on our farmstead.

We get our seeds from a variety of places. My favorites are Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Fedco Seeds, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, and MIGardener. So far we have started:

  • Onions (New York Early, Rosa Lunga di Tropea and Red Wethersfield)
  • Snap peas (even though pea seedlings have never done well for me…)
  • Leeks (yum, yum, YUM!)
  • Dianthus & Eucalyptus (because flowers are absolutely necessary)

So far it has only been about 40°F in our sun room!! That is COLD and I’m not sure if our seeds will even germinate. We *do* have a heating mat that our soil blocks sit on… hopefully it can give the little bump needed to germinate the seeds. This week is supposed to be warmer, so I am hopping some magic will happen.

I cant wait to start more seeds… next up are celery, kale, spinach, cabbage and many many many flowers (after visiting my 100 year old grandma in Virginia and boiling the 25 gallons of sap we will collect this week)

What seeds are you starting this year? Let me know in the comments!!
