Seedling Setup

Next week I am starting seeds!! I am starting seeds and I am NOT ready…. I am not ready at all.

Let me show you our seed starting set up from last year…

We had a nice grow tent nestled into our kitchen’s cubby. Filled with giant grow lights and potted plants. We had plastic shelves which we replaced with a wooden table to support a second grow light. It was intense. And I don’t want to know how much our electricity bill went up…

This year, we are going to be using our sun room. There are only a couple of issues

  • Preferably, the room would be facing south… but the sunroom is infact facing west. Our seedlings might not get the most amount of light possible. For this reason, we are still going to be using our grow lights.
  • The sunroom connects our mudroom to the rest of the house. We, and our doggies, walk through the room at least four times a day. That is four times a day that the dogs (or cat) might jostle our seedling trays
  • The sunroom is the FURTHEST room from our thermostat. On mornings like this, where it’s bellow 0 outside, it’s a chilly 40 degrees inside and the windows are frosted over.

I want to build a greenhouse so badly. So, so badly. But sometimes your just gotta use what you got. I contemplated renting greenhouse space at a local farm, but it just didn’t feel right. I needed to sign up months ago, before I had decided to sell some veggies at markets this summer. And it was fairly expensive…. well, it was expensive compared to my *free* sun room.

Oh right, the sun room. I need to go get it ready!! Clean it out, mount the grow lights, set up all my supplies. I am SO excited to be starting my flowers and veggies for the 2020 season. It’s getting closer and closer every day!!

Do you start your seeds or do you purchase seedlings? Maybe you do some of both? Let me know!!
